Junk Food Impairs Deep Sleep
Eating an unhealthy diet that is high in sugar, saturated fat, and processed foods may lead to less restorative sleep, according to a recent study. Overall, participants who consumed more junk food had shallower deep sleep than those who ate a healthier diet.
The study was a small one that involved only 15 healthy participants. Participants were assigned to eat an unhealthy and a healthy diet in a random order, each for a week at a time. Their brain activity was then monitored during sleep to examine slow-wave activity, one indicator of how restorative deep sleep is.
Though participants slept for the same amount of time regardless of which diet they were on, the diet containing more junk food consistently resulted in shallower, less restorative sleep.
One limitation of the study was that it did not examine the long-term impact of diet on sleep. However, Jonathan Cedernaes, who was involved in the study, stated that: “It can be hypothesised, from a sleep perspective, that greater importance should potentially be attached to diet in such conditions."
8,000 Steps a Day, A Few Days a Week Boosts Longevity
Walking 8,000 steps a day is associated with significant health benefits, even if only done 1-2 days a week, some new research has found. Specifically, it’s linked to a lower risk of death from any cause and particularly death from heart disease.
The study spanned a 10-year period and involved over 3,100 participants. It built off previous research showing that briskly walking 8,000 steps per day every day of the week is connected to a decreased mortality risk.
Though participants who took 8,000 steps 3-7 days a week did experience the greatest risk reduction (16.5%), those who took 8,000 steps only 1-2 days a week weren’t far behind with a 14.9% lower chance of dying than those who were sedentary.
This research suggests that those who can only fit in walking exercise a few days a week— on the weekend, for example— still may get substantial health benefits if they get enough steps in.

11 Proven Health Benefits of Garlic
Garlic’s ability to fend off vampires may be a myth, but it does have multiple research-backed benefits. It contains powerful sulfur compounds (the ones that give your breath a strong odor) that have immune-boosting properties and may help detoxify heavy metals. Garlic can also help improve blood pressure and cholesterol, two major factors for heart health, and is rich in antioxidants that may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. (More)
Toxic Ingredients to Beware of in Your Laundry Detergent
Laundry detergent is supposed to get your clothes clean but often contains toxic chemicals that can be absorbed through your skin (or inhaled). Synthetic fragrances are very common in detergents and are a leading cause of allergic reactions. Benzene, formaldehyde, and 1,4 dioxane are chemicals that often sneak into laundry products— and all are carcinogenic. Optical brighteners make clothes appear whiter by coating them with a substance that may cause skin irritation. (More)
Laughter Can Relieve Pain, Really is Good "Medicine"
A good comedy routine or funny animal video may be your ticket to better physical and mental health. Research has shown that laughter has impressive pain-relieving effects and can also reduce stress. It stimulates internal organs like your lungs, heart, and stomach muscles and promotes the release of “happy” endorphins. Laughing regularly may even boost immune function. Maybe it’s time to look up some punny jokes? (More)
Microplastics Can Accumulate in Your Respiratory System
Microplastics are tiny debris particles generated from the breakdown of plastic products. Their impact on human health is yet unknown, but animal research shows negative effects like gut harm, inflammation, and hormone-related issues. Recent research now shows that microplastics are increasing in the air and are frequently inhaled, accumulating in the nasal cavity, throat, and lung tissues. Quality air filters may cut down on particles present in indoor air, although outdoor areas with high plastic pollution will still present a hazard. (More)
Fruits and Vegetables Beneficial for Chronic Kidney Disease
Individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are often cautioned against consuming large amounts of fruits and vegetables due to concern that these foods will dangerously raise potassium levels. However, a new study from Japan found that lower fruit/vegetable intake was associated with a greater risk of death from CKD. Eating more fruits/vegetables was connected to a lower risk of death, suggesting that fruit/vegetable intake may not increase serum potassium levels as much as previously thought. (More)

Over 50 hormones have been identified in the human body so far. They are needed for numerous bodily processes, including metabolism, reproduction, growth, mood, and sleep. Having too much or too little of just one hormone can lead to serious health problems.
